FED:Bishop defends Turnbull's climate views
SYDNEY, Aug 2 AAP - Acting federal Opposition Leader Julie Bishop has backed Malcolm
Turnbull after a conservative magazine called for him to leave the coalition frontbench
over his views on climate change.
The Spectator Australia editorial savages Mr Turnbull, arguing his views in support
of an emissions trading scheme are out of step with the coalition mainstream.
But Ms Bishop is standing by the coalition's communications spokesman.
"Malcolm Turnbull's comments in relation to climate change are consistent with what
he's said all along," she told reporters in Sydney on Tuesday.
"He's making a very solid contribution to the frontbench as the communications spokesman."
Spectator is edited by Tom Switzer, who was an adviser to the former Liberal leader
Brendan Nelson until Mr Turnbull took over in 2008.
"He may be the darling of the Canberra press pack and he may be Labor voters' favourite,
but the coalition mainstream has come to see him as vain, irrelevant, opportunistic and
a walking affront to all they believe in," the editorial says.

FED:AOFM chief faces Senate hearing=2
The AOFM has also weighed in to a political stoush between the federal government
and Aussie Home Loans founder and executive chairman John Symond.
Mr Symond told a Senate hearing on Tuesday the AOFM was embarrassed about having to
knock back an offer to buy residential mortgage-backed securities from the non-bank lender.
But, Mr Bath said the CBA's one-third share in Aussie meant it could not invest in
Aussie Home Loans and he contested Mr Symond's assertion the two parties had earlier agreed
to a transaction.
"There was a lot of water to go under the bridge before we actually committed taxpayer
money to this transaction," he said.
"It's a bit disingenuous to say he was ready to go with a $2 billion transaction and
we pulled the rug out from under it. We did not."

SA:New policing teams for Adealide
ADELAIDE, Aug 9 AAP - South Australian police will deploy eight new neighbourhood policing
teams from Monday in a bid to combat local crime and disorder.
The teams, each consisting of five officers, will be deployed in Adelaide's southern
and northern suburbs.
Assistant Commissioner Grant Stevens said the concept of dedicating police officers
to specific suburbs will allow them to better engage with the local community to reduce
offending.
"This concept provides an opportunity for specific communities to develop stronger
relationships with their local police," Mr Stevens said.
"This already occurs in country police stations where the local community is able to
get to know their police and there is generally a high level of interaction between local
officers and the community."
The new police teams will be in addition to existing police numbers across Adelaide.

SA: Report into APY Lands sex abuse finished by former judge
ADELAIDE, April 30 AAP - A report into sexual abuse in Australia's oldest self-governing
tribal lands has been completed by a former Supreme Court judge.
Ted Mullighan will hand his report into sexual abuse in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara
(APY) Lands in South Australia's far north to the SA governor this week.
The report will then be tabled in state parliament next week.
Mr Mullighan, who earlier this month exposed systematic sexual abuse of SA foster children
after an almost four-year inquiry, was asked last year by the government to investigate
reports of widespread child sex abuse in the APY Lands.
The APY Lands, Australia's oldest self-governing tribal lands, were returned to a form
of formal governance when Mike Rann's Labor state government intervened in May 2004 in
a bid to stop alarmingly high rates of petrol sniffing.
The APY investigation was performed concurrently with Mr Mullighan's Children in State
Care Commission of Inquiry, which uncovered what the former judge described as a "foul
undercurrent" of sexual abuse of state wards.
The state wards inquiry found sexual abuse of foster children occurred in every type
of care, with Mr Mullighan hearing from 792 people who said they had been sexually abused
by 1,733 alleged perpetrators from the 1930s to the present.

Vic: Five workplace deaths in a week prompts safety call
MELBOURNE, April 27 AAP - Victoria has recorded one of its worst weeks for workplace
deaths, with a painter becoming the fifth person to die in a week.
WorkSafe Victoria spokesman Michael Birt said the painter fell 4.5 metres to his death
while working at a house at Wonga Park, in Melbourne's east, yesterday.
The 64-year-old fell from the balcony of the house, which was under construction and
had incomplete balustrading, Mr Birt said.
"It's arguably the worst week in recent years for workplace deaths," he said.
"WorkSafe is calling on employers and employees to go back to the basic idea of hazards
and work practices that they know are dangerous.
"People do things they know are dangerous but think it's okay."
Mr Birt said the five deaths had resulted as workers carried out routine jobs.
On Sunday, a man died when a tree he was cutting down fell on him at Wodonga on the
Victoria-NSW border.
On Saturday, a man died in hospital after suffering an electric shock while changing
lightbulbs at a car yard at Coburg the previous Tuesday.
A man died in hospital last Thursday, after he was crushed by a machine at CUB at Abbotsford
on April 13.
And last Wednesday, a truck driver was electrocuted when his tip-truck hit power lines
at Nhill in country Victoria.
"One of the things we're saying to people is to get back to those basics," he said.
"It's the risk that you have got to identify first, not wait until someone's not moving first."
Mr Birt said an investigation had been launched into yesterday's death.

WEB OF MEMORIES AGE-OLD RITES TAKE NEW FORM THROUGH THE INTERNET.(BUSINESS)
Byline: VANDANA SINHA THE VIRGINIAN-PILOT
The e-mails poured in from Cincinnati, Pennsylvania, Pakistan, Transylvania.
They came from next-door neighbors in Virginia Beach.
In a desolate world after the death of her son, Andy, they made Jeannette Bacs smile.
They were electronic eulogies to an online memorial - the computer generation's method of laying their loved ones to rest.
The Internet is alive and well in the death care industry. From online obituaries to funeral Webcasts, technology has allowed people to share grief beyond the graveside.
``Just as your embalming table and chapel serve a family, so should your computer and Internet,'' said Todd R. Abrams, president of Funeral Exchange, a Dallas firm that provides high-tech services to funeral homes.
Some families have welcomed the evolution with open arms.
``As it turned out, it was one of the best things that could have happened,'' said Bacs, whose online obituary of Andy in October drew 63 online tributes to him from cousins, soccer teammates and bar buddies across the world.
``Had it not been for e-mail, many of these persons would not have gotten a call through to send us their condolences,'' the 57-year-old Beach woman said. ``You just don't know who's out there whose life this is going to touch.''
As newspapers made their way online in the past several years, they took their most-read section - the obituary pages - with them.
One local entrepreneur noticed the shift and decided to build an online presence of his own: a Web directory of newspaper obit sites. Last month, he received 1,000 hits from the United States to Uruguay, Israel to Indonesia.
``Once people know information like that is available, they'll use it,'' said Carver D. Hyman, who runs Netmemories.com out of his Suffolk home. ``It's like a Yahoo in the bereavement industry.''
Hoping to make some money from advertisement banners and sales on his site - it links to flower and car rental companies - Hyman said this allows locals to find newspaper obituaries, type condolences, make donations and ship flowers from desktops to families halfway across the country.
The idea has funeral directors sitting up and taking note. More of them have begun to post obituaries online after faxing them into the newspaper. Locally, where the population is transient because of the military, interest is even stronger.
The typed words often sit against a backdrop of rosebuds, American flags or fall-colored forests. Some have gold wallpaper, some soft musical notes, some a collage of photos.
``If you don't get on the bandwagon, you're left in the dust,'' said John M. Butler, manager of Altmeyer Funeral Home, whose Web site houses more than 720 obits and 2,000 electronic condolences.
Last month alone, Altmeyer's site received 4,000 hits. Since January 2001, when the site went live, it has received more than 89,000 hits.
Intrigued, other companies have boarded the bandwagon to create a national database of online obituaries.
``Nobody lives where they were born anymore,'' said Michael Putzel, vice president for Web operations for Arkansas-based Continental Computer Corp., a software development firm that manages the year-old National Obituary Archive and its 50 million obits and death records.
``Children don't live near parents,'' he said. ``Friends are scattered all over the country and all over the world. Having a national obituary archive makes it much easier for people to get information.''
Next to the obit are options to send flowers, write tributes, find a funeral home. A more morbid feature allows people to ask the archive to e-mail them when a certain obituary is filed, whether by name, hometown or church.
While some families have been consoled by the language of the Internet, others say the electronic touch has made little difference in the grieving process.
An online obit popped up when 46-year-old Denise L. Maida's father passed away last February.
Eleven months later, she's not read a word of response on her computer.
``At that time, who wants to get on the Internet?'' the Virginia Beach resident said. ``Not me.''
Not David E. Chapman Jr., whose father died in November.
``It's only going to be the tech-savvy people who use it,'' said the 42-year-old Chesapeake man, who also hasn't received any e-mails or tributes to the online obit.
Fans of online obituaries argue that it takes time for some of the country's oldest traditions to catch on to the Internet age.
``Admittedly, a small percentage of people use the service today,'' said Michael Fullington, CEO of Continental Computer Corp. ``But our growth rate indicates that within five years, the largest part of funeral information will be received through sources like ours.''
But a few aren't waiting for widespread approval before entering the Internet age's next arena for the death care business: Webcasting.
The practice may still be slow to spread across the country, but a Williamsburg funeral home has set the stage for the first local family looking to broadcast funeral services on the Web for well-wishers who can't attend.
Starting this month, Nelsen Funeral Home plans to pilot the process, digitally recording the services, uploading them to its Web site and screening them for family and friends with passwords.
``It's a point in an individual's life,'' said President Blair H. Nelsen. ``People find they want to be there. They can't be there, and this fills a need for them.''
Though, he's not expecting any crowds in the first month.
``It's such a new concept,'' said Nelsen, who spent about $5,000 on the cameras and broadband. ``I'm not fooling myself. I don't think it'll take off overnight. I think it's something that's going to take time.''
Bacs can attest to that. It had taken time for her to embrace the Internet's role in her loved one's death. Three years ago, she buried her 76-year-old mother. The Net played no part in that. Not like it did in the passing of her 35-year-old son, Andy.
``But my mother was not in the dot-com age,'' she explained. ``My son was.''
That difference, she said, gives her grandson an electronic memento of his father that will never fade or yellow.

CareerShop.Com Goes Broadcast.
Launch of 'Career TV (SM)' Takes High-Value Recruitment and Career Enhancement
Tools to New Markets, New Viewers and All-New Levels With First Truly
Integrated Internet/Broadcast Package
ORLANDO, Fla., June 7 /PRNewswire/ -- CareerShop.Com today announced the launch of Career TV (SM) -- the first national broadcast program designed exclusively to address employment, recruiting and job-search topics. The program will serve as a major extension of CareerShop.Com, one of the Internet's top employment-related websites.
Following the summer pilot program, Career TV will air twice weekly during the Knowledge TV Cable Network's primetime fall lineup. Each episode of the program will reach approximately 20,000,000 households, with information-rich programming content designed to maximize the career-matching process for both recruiters and prospective employees.
"We view Career TV as the 'Premier Internet Career Portal,'" said David Wheeler, Vice President for Business Development with CareerShop.Com. "The whole concept is intended to provide a sort of TV Guide to the Internet, and act as a virtual career counselor -- all wrapped up in an entertaining and informative half-hour package.
"There is a host of career sites on the Internet. A few have received a great deal of exposure by advertising on the Super Bowl and such. Well, we decide to take a different tactic and provide national television programming to employees and employers. And not only about finding a new job, but how to do a better job and find more fulfillment in your present position."
Each episode of Career TV will include a variety of standard segments, including corporate features, news and information, advice and demonstrations, technology updates and virtual job fairs. Two to three companies per episode will use the program as a vehicle to feature their organizations and operations -- and key reasons why they are an employer of choice for high- caliber recruits.
In addition to company profiles, segments include Employment News, Training & Development, Your HR Department and Style. Each segment is intended to convey crucial information to help maximize a professional's opportunities in today's highly competitive job market.
"In that sense, it's an exact extension of the concept we pioneered with CareerShop.Com," said Jim McArdle, president. "We created that site to be much more than just a listing of jobs -- but to serve as a real value-added resource, a place where people could go to really learn about the issues and find the information they needed to make critical career decisions."
"CareerTV will be a true portal to career enhancement and internet recruiting and not a half hour paid commercial for CareerShop.com," McArdle added. "Not only do we welcome our competition as part of the show, we believe their inclusion will add true depth and credibility."
Career TV will target two high-value audience segments within the 25-44 age group: recent college graduates, experienced workers looking for career enhancements and new types of training/development.
The show's segments will present information on which technologies are important, which industries or jobs are hot, tips for dress and style in today's workplace, results from recent surveys and polls -- the types of knowledge needed to make good decisions.
One of the highlights of the lineup will be "Virtual Job Fairs" -- local interactive events that will be explored along with new technologies -- that match employees directly with companies who are hiring in specific markets.
"We've worked to make this a truly unique two-way experience for our audience," adds Wheeler. "It's not just for them to sit and watch, but for them to play a part. That picks up on the whole 'portal' concept of the Internet and makes the program a valuable tool. We feel like we've developed a real industry first with Career TV. We've known for a long time how the power of broadcast could enhance and supplement the interactive power of the Internet to create a tool that really connects."
CareerShop.com is a privately owned, Orlando, Florida-based company that offers a variety of online recruiting products and services for employers including memberships for do-it-yourself online recruiting, customizable resume management systems, and custom Internet-based recruitment advertising services.

Identity theft - could you be a victim?

The "thief" was able to acquire the names, addresses, emails, birthdates, passwords, security questions, phone numbers and other personal information from 77 million user accounts. Epsilon Marketing, a Dallas-based email marketing provider, was also recently the victim of a data breach, which resulted in the thief obtaining the names and email addresses of some customers from approximately fifty client businesses, which included large retailers and financial institutions.
Should these victims be worried? Most certainly, since the information stolen could be used by criminals to commit identity theft.
Identity theft is the unauthorized and often illegal acquisition and use of an individual's personal identifying information by a third party for illicit financial gain. In unusual circumstances, it might be in support of extortion designed to cause the victim financial hardship. Generally, identity thieves use someone else's identity and credit information in order to obtain money, services or products. The criminals use an array of methods to obtain identity information from dumpster diving to sophisticated system compromise over the internet.
Common identity theft methods that the public should be aware of include the following:
Dumpster Diving - The thief would go through the victim's trash to try to find valuable personal information. This information can come in the form of utility and credit card bills for example.
Skimming - An electronic method of capturing a victim's personal information with the use of a device that scans a victim's credit card and transfers the information collected to another device.
Phishing - One of the most pervasive methods used, phishing is an internet email scheme that tries to lure the unsuspecting victims to counterfeit websites in order to obtain personal and financial information.
Prevention is the best way to deal with this crime. While you cannot 100% guarantee that you will not become a victim (as in the recent headlines), you can make it more difficult for the criminals. Here are some tips:
Because identity theft can happen by way of internet, telephone or regular mail, you should be particularly wary of any emails, calls or mail that are attempting to obtain your personal or financial data.
Limit the credit cards and identification information that you carry in your wallet or purse. Do not regularly carry your passport, social insurance number (SIN) card or birth certificate, but keep them in a safe place.
Install and regularly update virus and spyware detection software on your computer.
Invest in a shredding machine for bills and other personal information that may be discarded.
Check your credit bureau for unusual activity at least annually using websites such as www.equifax.com or www.transunion.ca.
Memorize your passwords and personal identification numbers so you do not have to write them down.
Could you be a victim? The best way to determine this is to regularly monitor your financial accounts. The RCMP offers advice should you suspect or know that you are a victim of identity theft or fraud. Visit their website at www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
The content of this article is intended to provide a general guide to the subject matter. Specialist advice should be sought about your specific circumstances.

iYogi Reviews the Top Five Laptop Issues for Mobile Users.
New York (Vocus/PRWEB) April 14, 2011
iYogi, the provider of on-demand remote tech support services, has announced a new 'iYogi Reviews' revealing the top five laptop issues that travelers face. With the increasing escalation of laptop market share and rapid growth of mobile consumers, experts at iYogi produced research looking directly at the laptop issues that face users frequently on the move. Sourced from iYogi's knowledge base iMantra[TM], this report is compiled on the basis of customer interactions and covers in-depth solutions for the top five laptop problems confronted by mobile users.
"The increasing dependency on computers for work and play has created a growing base of mobile users who simply cannot live without their laptops", comments Vishal Dhar, President Marketing for iYogi. "More than a third of the world's workforce in the coming years is expected to be mobile and consumers want access and flexibility. As a result, they are driving a greater adoption for laptops."
iYogi reviews the top five issues and resolutions for laptop users:
* Internet security: If a user connects a laptop to a public Internet connection or unsecured Wi-Fi (i.e. at an airport or hotel), without taking adequate security measures, then the data sent and received across the network becomes accessible to hackers and privacy intruders. You are opening your device to possible identity fraud and making all your personal information available to hackers in the area.
Solution: The user is required to activate the built-in firewall included in the Windows operating system. This must be done every time the user connects the laptop. For a detailed solution on turning on the firewall, visit: http://www.iyogi.net/firewall/turn-on-the-in-built-firewall.html
* E-mail error alerts: SMTP, also known as Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, is used to send e-mail messages from an e-mail client to a mail server. When the e-mail client installed on your system is unable to send an e-mail, then an SMTP error message or code is displayed. Usually, an SMTP error is displayed when the outgoing server address is incorrect or incomplete. You should verify the complete server address before sending any e-mail. Error messages are often displayed such as "SMTP Error 550" or "SMTP Error 553" while trying to send an e-mail. This is most during common during travel and a common problem reported by users.
Solution: To see step-by-step solutions to fix error messages and ensure hassle-free e-mail communication on your laptop while traveling, visit: http://www.iyogi.net/email/resolve-smtp-errors-in-sending-e-mails.html
* Battery consumption and powers surge: While traveling, locating an electrical outlet compatible with your laptop charger can sometimes be difficult. To be a proactive user on the move depends on how long the battery can last without needing to recharge. Moreover, an unexpected power surge while working on the laptop can cause serious damage to the system.
Solution: You can configure your laptop's settings to enter standby or hibernation mode after a defined period of inactivity. Users can prevent the damage caused due to power surges by utilizing a reliable surge protector. To access a step-by-step solution to change the power settings of your laptop, visit: http://www.iyogi.net/laptop/configure-power-settings-in-your-laptop.html
* Threats or loss of confidential data: The safety and security of private and confidential data while traveling is another major concern among users.
Solution: Complete data backup can help prevent data loss. Additionally, you can encrypt important files and folders on your laptop. As a result, even if someone gains access to your laptop, they will not be able to read and view your confidential data and information. To access step-by-step solutions to install encryption software and take a complete backup of all the data, visit: http://www.iyogi.net/data-backup/encrypting-important-data.html
* Access to comprehensive tech support: Just like you would not consider traveling without travel insurance, access to comprehensive tech support while traveling with your laptop should be a priority. For problems and issues that are beyond your personal scope of troubleshooting, you will need professional assistance and it is imperative to subscribe to tech support. This can be accessed from anywhere and anytime. Because the concept of remote access to PCs for tech support is now easily available, this is an ideal option for those traveling with their PCs.
Solution: To learn more about iYogi's great tech support, visit: http://www.iyogi.net/technical-support/avail-comprehensive-tech-support.html

* Text-highlighting notes important sections for further review
* Interactive map links character associations and profiles for quick reference

"Early sales and user reviews of the CliffsNotes-To-Go apps demonstrate that students appreciate having this material on their iPhones and iPod touches," said Cindy Kitchel, vice president and publisher, Wiley Professional/Trade publishing. "Students turn to the Cliffs brand when they need clear, reliable review materials. We're excited to be working with Modality to deliver that content in an engaging, customizable mobile format."

Empowering people.(NEWS)
The national forestry service in the Netherlands, Staatsbosbeheer, has implemented a GeoWise (Edinburgh, Scotland) Internet Mapping Framework (IMF) for ESRI ArclMS and, most recently, extended this to include a full web-based spatial editing suite that integrates with its Oracle-ArcSDE spatial database. Andre Luinstra, senior ICT project manager, commented, "In relation to a desktop-based alternative, this is a much cheaper, more accessible and more easily manageable option."
The application can be used by relative novices and allows spatial features to be added and edited through a controlled data management process. Users carry out spatial editing through a web application and submit revisions for approval and quality assurance. They can then be committed to the live database. Andre added, "This distributed service can be offered to over 300 of our staff and contractors. Equally importantly, it can be made available to an almost limitless number of volunteers, in particular younger people, collecting a wide range of data for nature conservation purposes." IMF has also been picked up by other environment agencies such as Great Britain's Forestry Commission and the Department of Environment in Luxembourg as well as local authorities in the UK such as the district councils of Chichester and Sevenoaks.
