NSW: Federal move into state transport planning

The federal government will intervene in rail and road infrastructure planning .. to
try and reduce delays and budget blowouts.

Fairfax newspapers report federal transport minister MARK VAILE saying staff will be
trained to better scrutinise cost estimates of state-planned works.

The move comes as the government begins sharing 16.8 billion dollars of transport funding
among the states.

Mr VAILE has told The Australian Financial Review Canberra will refuse to bail out
the states when costs for transport projects go over budget.

The decision comes after repeated recent moves by the federal government into typically
state-controlled fields including water, health and council amalgamation.
