The national forestry service in the Netherlands, Staatsbosbeheer, has implemented a GeoWise (Edinburgh, Scotland) Internet Mapping Framework (IMF) for ESRI ArclMS and, most recently, extended this to include a full web-based spatial editing suite that integrates with its Oracle-ArcSDE spatial database. Andre Luinstra, senior ICT project manager, commented, "In relation to a desktop-based alternative, this is a much cheaper, more accessible and more easily manageable option."
The application can be used by relative novices and allows spatial features to be added and edited through a controlled data management process. Users carry out spatial editing through a web application and submit revisions for approval and quality assurance. They can then be committed to the live database. Andre added, "This distributed service can be offered to over 300 of our staff and contractors. Equally importantly, it can be made available to an almost limitless number of volunteers, in particular younger people, collecting a wide range of data for nature conservation purposes." IMF has also been picked up by other environment agencies such as Great Britain's Forestry Commission and the Department of Environment in Luxembourg as well as local authorities in the UK such as the district councils of Chichester and Sevenoaks.
