NSW: Scholarships get three year funding boost
SYDNEY, Feb 10 AAP - Five extra American history scholarships promoting closer ties
between Australia and the US would be funded for another three years, NSW Premier Bob
Carr announced today.
Mr Carr won the prestigious Fulbright 50th Anniversary Distinguished Fellow Award and
$50,000 in cash in 1999 - which he then used to fund five additional awards of $10,000
Fulbright scholarships.
The scholarships enabled NSW modern history teachers to embark on study missions to
the United States.
With two new sponsors, the scholarships would be funded for another three years, enabling
another 15 teachers to participate, Mr Carr said.
Westfield has agreed to provide $150,000 in cash while United Airlines will fly the
scholarship winners to the US.
American history is part of the high school Modern History syllabus.
The scholarship awards are named after their founder, the late Senator J William Fulbright,
and aim to promote closer relations between Australia and the US.
Since 1949, more than 2,400 Australians have studied as Fulbright scholars.
